CLIMATE
Situated just above the equator, Sri Lanka has a tropical climate characterized by high temperatures all year round, with alternating rainy and dry periods. However, the climate varies according to altitude and season.
The mountainous interior of the country has a temperate climate with cooler temperatures of around 20°C, while the other regions have a variable climate depending on the season. The island experiences two monsoons a year, the first affecting the south-west coast from May to October, and the second from October to January on the east coast.
