Difficulty ratings
To help you choose the trip that’s right for you, we’ve put together an in-house rating of the difficulty levels of our itineraries.
What are difficulty ratings for?
AT A LOSS WHEN IT COMES TO ESTIMATING YOUR HIKING LEVEL? DON’T PANIC: OUR JOB IS TO GUIDE YOU!
Quite often, our travellers set themselves limits and choose itineraries that are less difficult than they are really capable of, sometimes nurturing a few regrets.
Here’s how to estimate your level accurately and choose the adventure that’s right for you!
1/5: EASY-LEVEL STAYS
These stays are accessible to all, thanks to the relative ease of walking, estimated at 5h/day on average. The hiking days are organized in the form of strolls, and take place in an area that is not very remote and at a low altitude. Accommodation is comfortable, and you’ll sleep like a baby.
As for your physical condition, you’re in good health and should be able to cover an average of 500 meters of ascent per day.
Although this type of holiday is not very physically demanding, we advise you to keep fit before you leave by practicing an endurance sport regularly.
In any case, a little physical activity never hurt anyone!
2/5: MODERATE-LEVEL STAYS
These trips are accessible to as many people as possible, thanks to the relative ease of walking. Hiking days are relatively short (6 hours maximum), not very difficult and take place in a relatively remote region.
Some passes and passages may be at high altitude, but they do not represent any specific difficulty. However, you will need to manage the sequence of walking days and the remoteness of the journey.
You must be able to climb at least 800 meters per day, over several days. You must accept the sometimes sketchy conditions of accommodation, which could potentially be in a camp.
We advise you to keep in shape before you set off by practicing an endurance sport regularly.
3/5: SUSTAINED-LEVEL STAYS
These trips are for you if you already have a good experience of hiking and/or trekking.
Walks are between 6 and 8 hours daily for the duration of the trip, and some sections may be more difficult. The trip may take place at high altitude on part of the itinerary.
You must be able to climb at least 1000 meters per day, over several consecutive days. You must be able to accept potentially difficult mountain conditions and sometimes rustic accommodation in refuges, lodges or camps.
We strongly advise you to take part in regular endurance sports and to prepare yourself specifically for this trip two months in advance.
We also invite you to have a mountain medicine consultation.
4/5: VERY INTENSIVE STAYS
These trips are for you if you’re an experienced walker who can hike more than 8 hours a day at high altitude (> 3500m) for the duration of the trek.
The terrain can include difficult and/or lengthy sections that must be managed by each individual. The remoteness of certain itineraries represents real adventures, and the experience already acquired on previous trips will be of paramount importance so that you can make the most of them.
You must be able to climb at least 1500 meters per day, over several consecutive days. You must be willing to accept potentially difficult mountain conditions and sometimes rustic accommodation in refuges, lodges or camps.
You’ll need to keep fit regularly, practising an endurance sport several times a week, and preparing yourself specifically two months before departure.
We advise you to start with a less remote itinerary, to gain experience and prepare yourself for this second stay. First things first.
5/5: EXTREMELY DEMANDING STAYS
This very specific type of trip is carried out in small groups over difficult terrain.
These are reserved for very experienced walkers who have already travelled with Watse.
You must be able to endure positive vertical drops of close to 2,000 meters per day over several days. You must be willing to endure very difficult conditions throughout the trip. You are self-sufficient and mentally sound.
You’ll need to keep fit on a regular basis and take part in endurance sports (such as walking, running, cycling or swimming) several times a week, as well as preparing specifically for them two months before departure.
You can also sign up for a less remote itinerary to gain experience and prepare yourself.
This difficulty is only available in tailor-made travels.
