Day 1: Ascent to mountain pastures

5 hours 30 mins walk – Overnight in refuge – D+: 1,340 m / D-: 160 m

We meet at the Servoz train station at the entrance to the Chamonix valley at 8:30 am. We take advantage of the small paths in the Servoz forest to gain altitude and reach the chalets of Pormenaz. The horizon stretches out, giving us a spectacular panorama of the Mont-Blanc massif and the Aravis mountains. The climb continues to Lac de Pormenaz (1,945 m), nestled in a green setting against the imposing rocks of Les Fiz. We arrive at the refuge in the afternoon.

Day 2: Ascent of Mont Buet

7 hours’ walk – Overnight in refuge – D+: 1,370 m / D-: 1,435 m

We leave the refuge early in the morning, heading for the Col de Salenton (2,526 m) via the Villy valley and its chalets. The ascent in these calm, unspoilt surroundings is a great warm-up. We reach the col before starting our ascent of Mont Buet. Leaving the alpine pastures behind, a pretty path leads us gradually up through scree and boulders to the summit. It’s not unusual to have to cross névés even late in the season.

At the summit we enjoy a 360° view of the neighbouring massifs: Mont-Blanc, the Aravis mountains, the peaks of the Swiss Valais…

We follow the same path down to the Col de Salenton before turning off towards the Vallon de Bérard, where we spend the night in a warm, rustic refuge.

Day 3: Aiguilles Rouges traverse

6 hours 30 mins walk – D+: 770 m / D-: 1725 m

One last fine day’s walking awaits us. We climb to the Col de Bérard and make a magnificent off-trail descent to the Pont d’Arlevé before heading back up to the Moëde Anterne refuge. We then reach Servoz on a pleasant, little-traveled trail.

Depending on the weather and the group’s wishes, the guide can also suggest easy access to the village of Le Buet and Servoz by local train.
