About the Haute-Route Chamonix-Zermatt ski raid

Set off on the legendary Haute-Route between Chamonix and Zermatt, linking the two mountaineering capitals on touring skis.

From Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn, you’ll cross numerous passes and glaciers, and enjoy the immensity of the high-mountain landscape.

Day 1: Col du Chardonnet - Refuge de Saleina

Overnight in refuge – collective dormitory – D+: 1270 m / D-: 1672 m

Meet at the Grands Montets lifts. Ascent to Col des Rachasses.

After crossing the glacier des Rognons, the glacier d’Argentière and the Col du Chardonnet, we reach our first hut, the Saleina hut, near the glacier of the same name.

Day 2: Refuge de Saleina - La Fouly

Night in hostel – collective dormitory – D+: 650m / D-: 1600m

From the refuge, climb to the Col de Saleina (3261m) followed by a beautiful traverse to the summit of the Grande Lui
(3508m).

We descend the glacier to the village of La Fouly, where we spend the night.

Day 3: La Fouly - Col du Grand Saint Bernard

Night in hostel – collective dormitory – D+: 1250m / D-: 300m

You’ll start your day with a long ascent of the Dranse de Ferret valley before reaching the Ferret window at 2698m, which marks the border with Italy. Depending on conditions and fitness, you’ll have the opportunity to climb a small summit and ski down to the summit. Finally, after a short ascent, you’ll reach the Hospice du Grand Saint Bernard, where you’ll spend the night.

Day 4: Col du Grand Saint Bernard - Cabane de Valsorey

Night in refuge – collective dormitory – D+ : 1700 m / D – : 550 m

Descent from Grand St Bernard, followed by a climb to Col de Proz (2779 m).

A beautiful traverse to the Proz glacier, then to the Col de Montorge (2881 m), followed by a descent into the valley behind the Col.

We climb back up to the Valsorey hut for the night.

Day 5: Cabane de Valsorey - Cabane de Chanrion

Night in refuge – collective dormitory – D+: 800 m / D-: 1300 m

Early start, with a steeper climb towards the Col de Sonadon (3520m).
A slightly more technical section, with skis and crampons.

From the Col de Sonadon, we descend over the Mont Durand glacier to the Chanrion hut.

Day 6: Cabane de Chanrion - Refuge Bertol

Night in refuge – collective dormitory – D+: 1700 m / D-: 852 m

Ascent of the Otemma glacier to the Col du Petit Mont Collon (3292 m), then traverse to the Col de l’Evêque (3392 m).

Passage of Col Collon (3074m).

After a fine descent of the Arolla glacier, we climb back up to the Bertol hut perched at 3311 m. Magnificent panoramic views of the Dent Blanche and the Matterhorn.

Day 7: Refuge Bertol - Zermatt

D+: 460m / D-: 2085 m

Cross the Mont Miné glacier to climb Tête Blanche (3724 m), facing the mythical Matterhorn.

Over the Col d’Hérens (3462m) and down to Zermatt via the Stockji and Zmutt glaciers. We are now at the foot of the Matterhorn’s north face.

Return to Chamonix on your own.

ASSISTANCE AND SAFETY

We strongly advise you to take out assistance insurance for the duration of your trip.

Make sure your insurance covers all medical expenses in the event of an accident.

You must make sure that you are covered for mountain rescue costs. If this is the case, you must provide us with the following information before you set off on your trek:

  • a certificate from the insurance company covering mountain rescue costs.
  • the contract number and telephone number of the assistance center

Beware of restrictive clauses in certain insurance policies (particularly those linked to Visa Premier, Gold or other cards), such as mountain insurance limited to snow activities, or altitude sickness not recognized as an illness requiring repatriation, which will be refused.

CLIMATE

Summer and winter alike, temperatures in the mountains vary with altitude, and the way they feel can be greatly affected by the intensity of the wind.

HEALTH AND VACCINES

No vaccinations required.

We strongly recommend that you are up to date with the usual vaccinations: diphtheria-tetanus-poliomyelitis, whooping cough, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, hepatitis A and B.

We recommend that you have a check-up with your dentist before you leave.

Transport and conditions

Meet at the Grands Montets lifts in Chamonix on the morning of D1. Transport to Chamonix on D1 and from Zermatt on D7 are not included in the price.

A return trip from Zermatt to Chamonix is available as an option (on request).

The lift on D1 is included in the price of the stay.

LUGGAGE

You carry your own personal belongings for the duration of your stay. We advise you to take only the bare essentials with you, so as not to burden yourself unnecessarily.

You can recharge your electronic devices in the refuges. We advise you to bring an external battery if you need to.

No visa required for French nationals and citizens of bordering countries.

Travel to and from departure and arrival points is not included. Meals not included (cold drinks, snacks, etc.) and accommodation are included in the price of the stay. Tipping is not compulsory and should reflect your satisfaction with the team.
