About the Trek to the Kanchenjunga base camps, Nepal

The Kanchenjunga region is located in the far east of Nepal, on the border with India. This area, far off the beaten tourist track and little frequented by trekkers, lies at the foot of Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world. On this trek, you’ll reach the two base camps of this mythical 8,000-metre peak.

Watse takes you to an undiscovered wilderness of green valleys and thick forests, crossed by roaring rivers and inhabited by the Rai and Limbu ethnic groups. The Kanchenjunga area is also home to rare wild animals such as the snow leopard and the red panda. Adventurers who love nature and the great outdoors, this is the trek for you!

You will leave with :
Pierrick
Guide and founder of Watse
“The most important thing for me is to enable walkers to discover new places, new cultures and to interact with the locals.”

Day 1-2: Flight to Nepal

Overnight at hotel – Meals at your own expense

We leave France for the Himalayas. We land in Kathmandu, the Nepalese capital.

After being greeted by some of the local Nepalese team, we make our way to our hotel and have some free time to take our first steps in this giant anthill.

Day 3: Off to the Kanchenjunga region

50-minute flight – 8-hour transfer – Overnight in lodge
Early this morning we catch a flight to Bhadrapur and in 50 minutes we’re in the far east of Nepal. We then head due north through the tea plantations of this part of the country. We make our way over very hilly terrain and finally leave the main road to head into the green countryside and terraced fields to the small hamlet of Hapu Khola. Here, at 1280m, we settle in before the start of our trek tomorrow.

Day 4: In the countryside

6 hours’ walk – Overnight in lodge – D+ 900 m / D- 300 m
Today we’re moving along the river, in the heart of the Nepalese countryside. We pass through several hamlets, giving us the opportunity to observe the Nepalese in their daily activities and to meet them. A beautiful day of greenery as we reach the typical village of Khebang (1900m), inhabited by the Limbu ethnic group.

Day 5: Khebang to Yamphudin (1710m)

5 hours’ walk – Overnight in lodge – D+ 500 m / D- 700 m
The day is less arduous than yesterday, and still offers us the impressive work of the Nepalese, who sculpt the hills they inhabit to grow all kinds of vegetables and cereals. The balcony trail offers fabulous views of the mythical Jannu and the eternal snows of Kanchenjunga.

Day 6: In the Amje Khola valley

4 hours’ walk – Overnight in lodge – D+: 850m / D-: 200m
The day gets off to a fairly steep start up to the Dhupi Bhanjyang pass at 2550 meters. We then descend into the Amje Khola valley to Sherpa Gaon at 2340 meters.

Day 7: Beyond 3,000 metres

5 hours 30 mins walk – Overnight in lodge – D+: 1300m / D-: 700m

We climb along a ridge line to the Lasiya Bhanjyang pass (3550m), alternating between forests of giant rhododendrons and sparse clearings offering views of Kanchenjunga, Jannu and Indian Sikkim. The pass is the last rampart before finally dropping into the Kanchenjunga valley and reaching Tortong (3010m) on the banks of the Simbuwa Khola.

Day 8: Along the river to Tseram (3900m)

5-hour walk – Overnight in lodge – D+: 1000m / D-: 100m

All day we hike through the Simbuwa Khola valley, where we really begin to feel our isolation. We reach Tseram, where we will stay for two nights.

Day 9: Day trip to Kanchenjunga South Base Camp

7 hours’ walk – Overnight in lodge – D+: 900m / D-: 900m
A magnificent day of acclimatization. We ascend the valley beyond Tseram, above the Yalung glacier, to the Okhordung lookout at 4730m. The southern base camp of Kanchenjunga is a little further on, and is used for ascents of this 8000 by the normal route. The south face of Kanchenjunga looms large before us.

Day 10: Crossing high passes to Tselele (4200m)

7 hours’ walk – Overnight in lodge – D+: 1020m / D-: 680m
It’s a real high-altitude day for us today, and we’ll really have the feeling of being in the heart of the Himalayas. We cross several passes: Sinelapacha Bhanjyang (4650m), Mirgin-la (4480m) and Sinion-la (4440m) before reaching Tselele, the day’s stage at 4200 meters.

Day 11: Descent to Ghunsa (3420m)

4 hours’ walk – Overnight in lodge – D+: +100m / D-: 760m
We start our descent and continue up the Kanchenjunga massif to the left. The mountain gently changes its appearance as we go along. Finally, we reach the village of Ghunsa in the valley.

Day 12: Ascent to the mythical Jannu valley

4 hours’ walk – Overnight in lodge – D+: 850m / D-: 220m
We follow a balcony trail up the Ghunsa Khola river to the hamlet of Kambachen (4100m). Here we enjoy a sumptuous view of Jannu, this sacred peak, also known as Kumbhakarna and rising to 7710m, is reputed to be one of the most technical in the world.

Day 13: Kambachen to Lonak (4750m)

4 hours 30 mins walk – Overnight in lodge – D+: 750m / D-: 100m
We continue our ascent through the valley, which gradually opens up to a sandy plateau where Lonak, the former alpine hamlet of the local shepherds, is located. We settle into a very basic stone lodge for the next two nights.

Day 14: Excursion to Pang Pema (5120m), north base camp

6 hours 30 mins walk – Overnight in lodge – D+: 550m / D-: 550m
A fantastic day awaits us in the high mountains, as we pass the 5,000-meter mark in a magical setting of immaculate peaks unveiling one after the other. Our eyes will be wide open all day long!

6 hours 30 mins walk – Overnight in lodge – D+: 130m / D-: 1450m

Day 16: Descent to Amjilosa (2550m)

7 hours’ walk – Overnight in lodge – D+: 340m / D-: 1400m

Day 17: End of trek in Chirwa

7 hours 30 mins walk – Overnight in lodge – D+: 480m / D-: 1570m
We continue our descent. At Sukethum, the valley opens wider with the confluence of the Ghunsa Khola and Tamor River. We continue our walk along the river through numerous villages to Chirwa (1450m).
Tonight will be an opportunity to celebrate our adventure with the Nepalese team who have accompanied us this far. Tomorrow our paths will part.

Day 18: Discover the tea plantations

8-hour drive – Overnight in lodge
We embark on a long day’s drive, first on a track to the large town of Taplejung and then on the road we took on the outward journey. In the other direction, we cross the tea plantations of the Ilam region, where we stop for the night.

Health & climate

JET LAG

REGISTRATION

All climates are present in Nepal, and change with altitude: tropical in the jungles of the Terai, temperate in the valleys and polar in the high mountains. Nepal’s climate varies greatly according to region and season. The country’s latitude is roughly equivalent to that of Florida, giving it a similar tropical and subtropical climate in the Terai region. Outside the Terai, however, the climate is completely distinct. Remarkable differences in climatic conditions are generally linked to the enormous range of altitudes within a short distance, from north to south. Nepal’s climate is suitable for all seasons. But to see and hike the mountains, you need to go between October and April, when it’s dry and sunny. At altitude, you’ll need a good fleece, a down jacket for the evenings and a good sleeping bag for the night, even in summer. The climate in Nepal month by month :

  • January-February: It’s cool and the big passes are snowed in, but the sky is blue and with a little wool you’ll be fine.
  • March-April-May: This is a great time for long treks. The weather is fine, you can see the mountains and the rhododendrons are in bloom.
  • June to September: It’s monsoon season, but it rains mostly at night. The atmosphere is very special and the light perfect for photos. There are great festivals in the Kathmandu valley.
  • October to November: This is still a great time for long treks, with crystal-clear landscapes all day long.
  • December: It gets colder in December, but it never freezes in Kathmandu.

HEALTH AND VACCINES

There are no compulsory vaccinations, but we strongly recommend that you are up to date with the usual vaccinations: diphtheria-tetanus-poliomyelitis, whooping cough, tuberculosis, hepatitis A and B. You may also wish to be vaccinated against typhoid fever, yellow fever and Japanese encephalitis. Malaria and dengue fever are present all year round below 2,000 m altitude, particularly in the rural areas of the Terai – classified as zone 2. Anti-malarial treatment is recommended if you are planning an extended stay in this region. Consult your GP. In addition, you should take precautions to protect yourself against mosquito bites (repellent, loose-fitting clothing). We recommend that you have a check-up with your dentist before you leave.

IFREMMONT

For this trip, Watse offers you Ifremmont’s SOS MAM service, which means that in the event of a problem, a French doctor specializing in altitude and isolated environments can be reached by satellite telephone. Your Guide is also specially trained by Ifremmont to deal with these situations. He is the local medical correspondent for these doctors. We’ll ask you to create an online medical file (http://www.teleconsultationsosmam.com), which you can also use every day to take charge of your health. We’ll provide you with a code to link your file to the trip you’re about to embark on. You’ll then be able to carry out a teleconsultation with these mountain medicine specialists before you leave, at a cost of €46 (non-reimbursed). This service is a real plus in terms of preventing the risks associated with altitude and remote areas . Please note that this service does not replace your repatriation insurance, which is compulsory in certain countries.

Transport and conditions

Our proposal includes one porter for every 2 participants. Please ensure that your personal bag does not exceed 10kg. Any excess weight will require the hiring of an additional porter, at the expense of the participants.

The stay

MEALS

You are responsible for your own meals in Kathmandu and on international flights. During the trek, we take morning and evening meals at the camps. At lunchtime, we organize a picnic or eat at lodges along the way. In Nepal, the food is simple but good. Mostly rice, pasta and vegetables, meat is rare. The traditional dish is Dhal Bhat (rice and lentils), which can be eaten anywhere in Nepal or in the mountains.

Please let us know if you have any food allergies when you register.

ACCOMMODATION

During the trek, we stay in lodges, similar to mountain refuges in France, often very basic. The atmosphere is always warm and welcoming. They usually contain a common room with a stove, a kitchen, usually bedrooms and sometimes dormitories.

Heating is not always available, and toilets are often rudimentary and outdoors.

Any hot showers, telephone and camera battery recharges, and internet connections are to be paid for directly on site.
