About the Ladakh Villages and High Passes trek
An original, off-the-beaten-track journey into the wilds of little-traveled Ladakh. Between valleys and villages, this journey offers an in-depth discovery of the region and a wealth of encounters.
At the foot of Ladakh’s most climbed 6000-meter peak, Stok Kangri, our trekking route winds its way between high passes and green poplar valleys, amidst oases cleverly created by the villagers. You’ll meet many people as you go along, and the smiles of the locals will stay with you until… you come back! Because the enchantment is real and the playground almost inexhaustible.

Day 1-2: Travel to Ladakh
Overnight in guesthouse – Meals at your own expense
We leave France on a flight to New Delhi, India, before a 1.5-hour domestic flight to Leh. This domestic flight passes over the Himalayan range and lands on one of the world’s highest runways, at 3,250 m altitude.
We reach Leh’s lively district at 3500 m and, depending on the mood, short visits and an initial acclimatization phase.
Day 3: Monasteries of the Indus Valley
3 hours drive – Overnight in guesthouse – Meals at your own expense
The day is devoted to visiting the Indus Valley’s must-see sites: the monasteries of Hemis, Thiksey, Thak Thog and, of course, Shey, the ancient capital of Ladakh. Our acclimatization continues.
Day 4: First acclimatization hike around Leh
4 hours’ walk – Overnight in guesthouse – D+: 350 m / D-: 300 m – Meals at your own expense
Today we begin our walk in the highlands of Ladakh with a day hike around Leh, revealing extraordinary and infinite landscapes.
Day 5: Leh to Mankarmo
30 minutes drive – 5 hours 30 walking – Overnight in tent – D+ : 830 m / D- 30 m
Short transfer to Stok (3500 m) where we can take time to explore the village. We then begin our trek up a spectacular gorge with its many geological features, before finding our campsite at Mankarmo (4400 m) not far from Kangri La Cha (6195 m), the goal of a future trip…
Day 6: Crossing the Matho-la pass
5 hours 30 mins walk – Overnight in tents – D+: 580 m / D-: 550 m
Today we pass our first pass. The climb is gradual, we approach a sheepfold and then the zigzag path leads us to the Matho-la (4930 m), from where the view is splendid and we can see the nearby Matho Kangri (5860 m). The descent to Gyang Poche camp (4440 m) is rapid.
Day 7: Gyang Poche to Shang Phu
6 hours’ walk – Overnight in tents – D+: 780 m / D-: 840 m
We enjoy a varied ascent with plateau sections offering breathtaking views to reach Shang La (4940 m). On the way, we pass several sheepfolds, giving us an opportunity to talk to these nomadic herders and gain a better understanding of their way of life. The descent begins in pastures, where we’ll observe yaks in a magical setting of red hues. The Shang Phu camp (4,374 m) awaits us with its nomads at the confluence of three valleys.
Day 8: In the vastness of Ladakh
5 hours 30 mins walk – Overnight in tents – D+: 470 m / D-: 860 m
Today, a balcony path leads us to Gyuncho-la (4590 m), which is actually made up of two successive passes. Beautiful fairy chimneys await our gaze as we lose ourselves in this vast setting. The descent along the river is easy, and we reach our camp at Chogdo (4000m) in a beautiful valley of folded geological forms.
Day 9: Passage to 5000 metres
6 hours’ walk – Overnight in tents – D+: 1340 m / D-: 470 m
We begin our day in a unique and magnificent setting, with numerous river crossings before progressing towards Kongmaru-la (5260 m), which we reach after a long and beautiful climb. From the pass, the view is splendid and endless. But what really catches our eye is Kang Yatse, towering just in front of us, waiting for us. It’s an easy descent to the Nimaling meadows (4840 m), where we set up camp.
Day 10: In a glacial setting
6 hours’ walk – Overnight in tents – D+: 500 m / D-: 600 m
The scenery surrounding us for these last two days is totally fabulous, amidst glaciers and at the gateway to Changtang, the Tibetan highlands. Today we pass the Lhalung-la (5320 m) before reaching our camp at Droksa (4700 m).
Day 11: The last passes of our adventure
7 hours’ walk – Overnight in tents – D+: 500 m / D-: 800 m
Last day of walking amidst these breathtaking landscapes. The emotion is overwhelming as we pass the Chagtsang-la (5200 m) and the Poze-la (4950 m), the last two passes of our journey.
The time has come to shout a big Kiki Soso Largyalo (“the gods will always be victorious” in Tibetan) and leave these high valleys to reach Lhato (4000m), on the famous Leh-Manali road.
Day 12: Return to Leh
2 hours drive – Overnight in guesthouse – Meals at your own expense
Today we head back to Leh. The rest of the day is devoted to shopping and sightseeing.

Day 13: Leaving Ladakh
Domestic flight then international flight – Meals at your expense
Morning flight to Delhi, then on to France.
Day 14: Arrival in France
International flight – Meals at your expense
Depending on flight options, you may arrive in France late on D13.

Health & climate
JET LAG
+ 3h30 compared with France in summer
+ 4h30 compared with France in winter
CLIMATE
Nestled between the Himalayas to the south and the Karakorum to the north, Ladakh, at an average altitude of 5,300 m, has two main seasons:
– winter, with temperatures dropping to -30°C, snow and road closures.
– and summer (mid-May to mid-October), when the climate is very dry and harsh (the mountains basically stop the monsoon), with intense sunshine.
By September, it’s already freezing at night, and on some summits, it’s as early as mid-August before the cold sets in. It is quite possible to encounter snow in Ladakh in September, so you need to be prepared and well equipped.
Remember: weather is an unpredictable parameter, so it’s best to be prepared in the event of exceptional and difficult climatic conditions.
HEALTH AND VACCINES
No vaccinations required.
We strongly recommend that you are up to date with the usual vaccinations: diphtheria-tetanus-poliomyelitis, whooping cough, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, hepatitis A and B.
We recommend that you have a check-up with your dentist before you leave.
IFREMMONT
For this trip, Watse offers you Ifremmont’s SOS MAM service, which means that in the event of a problem, a French doctor specializing in altitude and isolated environments can be reached by satellite telephone. Your Guide is also specially trained by Ifremmont to deal with these situations. He is the local medical correspondent for these doctors.
We’ll ask you to create an online medical record (http://www.teleconsultationsosmam.com), which you can also use every day to take charge of your health. We’ll provide you with a code to link your file to the trip you’re about to make. You’ll then be able to carry out a teleconsultation with these mountain medicine specialists before you leave, at a cost of €46 (non-reimbursed). This service is a real plus in terms of preventing the risks associated with altitude and remote areas.
Please note that this service does not replace your repatriation insurance, which is compulsory in some countries.
Transport and conditions
Overland travel is by private vehicle. We also use a domestic flight from New Delhi to Ladakh.
AIR
Air fares will be maintained until 3 months before departure and may be readjusted if necessary if you register during this period.
LUGGAGE
During the trip, you carry only your light backpack (30/35 L) with the essentials for the day (water, sun cream, jacket, small first-aid kit…).
Every evening at the stopover, you pick up your travel bag (80/100 L), which is entrusted to the mules during the trek. During the trek, the mules or horses are used to transport your personal belongings.
For this reason, it is imperative that you set off on the trek with only the bare essentials (maximum 15 kg). Your luggage may be weighed at the start of the trek, and if it is overweight, you will have to review its contents. You can leave the rest of your belongings at the hotel and pick them up again at the end of the trek.
